ADD/ADHD - Naturally Correcting Behavior Problems in Children
The number of children being diagnosed with behavioral problems is on the rise. The common medical approach has been treatment with rather strong drugs. Somewhere between 10-30% of children on these drugs either don't respond or don't tolerate them.
Even when the drugs seem to help, some parents prefer a more natural approach to addressing these problems. They often want to do more than simply control behavior, but rather correct whatever underlying problem may be present.
With advances in modern research, there is now a light on some of the underlying issues in these cases. This progress comes in the form of deeper understanding of the brain chemicals involved.
Different Types of Problems
Within the general category of children's focus, attention and behavior problems, there are 3 basic sub-types. Although the technical terms for these have changed over the past few years, they commonly go by the terms "Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)" and "Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)." The third type is a combination of the two.
ADD is characterized by a greater level of inattention. ADHD is characterized by more impulsive and hyperactive behavior.
Interestingly, the profile of neurotransmitter imbalances for each of these 3 categories is different. Herein lies the promise of reducing or eliminating the problem by supplementing and rebalancing these brain chemicals using natural amino acids.
How We Approach Treatment
We start with an initial history to help identify the behavioral tendencies present. We also order a urinalysis that will help us understand the underlying neurotransmitter imbalances. Some immediate recommendations are given and we discuss the additional options for treatment that will support overall progress.
Once we have the lab results, we are ready to implement a specific nutritional protocol that will begin the neurotransmitter rebalance and support process. Generally, initial results are seen within just a few weeks.
At that point, we re-evaluate our progress and make further recommendations. Because children are so resilient, often the results are surprisingly quick.
This approach works whether the child is currently taking ADD/ADHD medications or not. In many cases, these medications can be reduced or eliminated when the underlying imbalance is corrected.
